Among other things…

Observation from Tuesday December 7: Drop the “among other things”.

My thesis: 90% of “among other things” (bland annat in Swedish) can be eliminated without impacting the text. This applies to both Swedish texts and their English translations. The bland annat is a filler phrase with no useful content. If you can’t/won’t name what the other things are, no need to mention they exist. For almost all texts, no one assumes that what you say is an all inclusive statement so you don’t need to mention there were other things “just in case”.
